My most sincere apologies…

I do not mean to offend, but it seems to me that creating layers/images “piece by piece” seems like a very limiting, process that does not yield a true 3D image… For simple scenes it may work, but in complex scenes, w/ many objects, and even moreso when the objects and figures interact w/ each other physically, that just doesnt seem viable. How would one handle booleans (even better, booleans w/i other booleans)? Objects w/i other objects? Objects or scene components partially emerged under water? How would one deal w/ objects behind objects? Props going though scene objects? Terrains and landscapes?!? How would that work for underwater scenes in which the atmosphere and how the scene elements are intergrated into it?!? Generally, when we create a scene in 3D, there is some form of “artifical” atmospheric lighting (basically a sun or a moon). If you have a character in that scene, the placement/intensity of the sun/mooon/lights will determine the lighting of the character. Remove that character from the scene, or rather just adding a layer of a character onto that scene, the light will not interact w/ the character or other scene props layered on “naturally”… Suppose you have a scene w/ a figure knee-high in water, trees in the background, and for arguments sake of a natural setting, some rocks protruding through the water… In my opinion, if that scene was done in layers, you wouldnt get natural reflection or transparency of the water. How would the rocks look suubmerged as opposed to protruding? How would the sun/moon or scene lighting interact w/ the trees, and the shadows of the leaves?!? How would haze and atmosphere affect objects close and far from the camera? If I tried to apply layers to my type of work, how would I set figures inside of the boxes that are inside of the boxes that are logded inside the guys chest, whos sitting behing the wall inside the box LOL!!!
That being said, I do NOT like lighting or atmospherics in either Poser or Daz Studio. I DID have to hunt down light settings to use as a guide and learn from, but it was an investment towards render quality well worth the effort. Lighting is seriously serious “stuff”, the dramatic impact good lighting can have on renders in my opinion has always shown itself worth the wait. Of course we have our preferences, our own work habits, tips and tricks we use to get the quality of output we want. And in the end, thats all that matters. However, being content w/ ones output shouldnt stop them pushing their tools and programs to the limits.
These absurdly long render times I feel are 1 part Daz getting into the Bryce “brain” and 1 part my pc. Well see for sure when I set up that benchmark, looking forward to it =D The Digital Surrealist the art of Paris Wells
